Position: Financial Literacy Coordinator
Basic Function:
The Financial Literacy Coordinator is responsible for increasing the financial independence and self-determination of Chicagoans with disabilities; this includes consumers who previously attended Access Living’s Financial Stability classes. The employee will work with consumers in follow-up one-to-one sessions and develop individualized goals. The Financial Literacy Coordinator will meet quarterly with each participant individually, expanding on the curriculum featured in the financial literacy classes. The Coordinator will discuss budgeting and saving and assist each individual with opening their own bank accounts, tailoring goals for each participant to their specific needs.
Specific Duties:
- Recruit and enroll at least 50-75 consumers for financial literacy course and 1:1 counseling annually.
- Meet quarterly with each participant individually, then twice a year in the second year, and finally as needed in the final year of the program
- Work one-on-one with consumers to assist them in gaining self-confidence and on developing independent living skills related to their financial goals.
- Assist consumers with understanding how to read credit reports, build & repair credit history, get banked, create budgets and follow a spending plan, and create financial goals.
- Conduct workshops and information sessions to educate consumers on various financial management and credit management topics such as budgeting, saving, banking products, credit building and management, housing, identify theft, and other consumer topics.
- Work with participants to tailor goals to the consumer’s specific needs. Maintain records and prepare reports to document all counseling/coaching sessions and related activities.
- Interface with local financial institutions to ensure consumers are aware of all banking products and value-added financial services.
- Stay abreast of products and programs that can help people with disabilities build credit history and wealth, such as lending circles, and incorporate into programming as appropriate.
- Attend economic justice coalition meetings and provide input on economic justice policy initiatives.
- Provide peer support and mentoring to improve consumer’s independence.
- Track program consumers to assess outcome of financial counseling and success in achieving banking accounts and improving credit history.
- Report to the Manager of Community Supports, to ensure identified benchmarks, outcomes and all grant deliverables are met.
- Maintain records and prepare reports to document all counseling/coaching sessions and related activities.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education and Training:
College degree or equivalent experience.
Experience:
Employee must have basic financial literacy knowledge and strategies/tools to assist consumers in the field of financial literacy. Having an understanding of issues that affect people with disabilities is strongly preferred. Good communication skills needed.
Physical Demands:
Must be able to travel within the City of Chicago.
Equipment Operated:
Use personal computer, telephone, copier and printer.
Working Environment:
Access Living shared office space, open plan seating with COVID-19 prevention parameters. Access Living staff work at least two days per week in the office. Other days can be remote/from home.
Access Living requires all staff members to be fully vaccinated including boosters against COVID-19. Disability and/or religious vaccine exemptions are considered on a case by case basis.
