CHICAGO – Following a federal judge’s ruling on Friday, March 29, the City of Chicago will be required to defend a lawsuit alleging that it funded and developed tens of thousands of affordable rental housing units without ensuring they are accessible to people with disabilities, as required by federal law.

Access Living Disability Rights Group Demands City of Chicago Make Homeless Shelters Accessible

Demands come as woman with a disability files suit for being denied shelter

CHICAGO, March 12 – Members of Access Living’s Disability Rights Action Coalition for Housing (DRACH) will gather at 10 a.m. today, Tuesday, March 12, outside the City of Chicago Community Center located at 10 S. Kedzie to demand that Chicago make its homeless shelters accessible to people with disabilities, including those who are denied access because they use canes or wheelchairs.

Woman Denied Shelter Due to Disability Files Lawsuit Against the City

Complaint contends that inaccessibility of the city’s shelter system violates the Americans with Disabilities Act and other federal law.

CHICAGO -- Laura Martin, a woman with rheumatoid arthritis, filed a lawsuit in federal court against the city of Chicago and city officials Monday evening. The suit contends the city violated Martin’s rights by failing to provide an accessible homeless shelter.
