The Illinois State of the State and Access Living

Today, as Governor Rauner prepares for his second State of the State address, members of the Access Living community will be in Springfield and in Chicago. Advocates will send the message to Governor Rauner and to State Legislators that Illinois needs a budget now. Access Living, like so many other non-profits around Illinois is waiting for unpaid bills from the State. Access Living and other social service providers continue to provide services to marginalized communities across Illinois, doing whatever it takes to meet the needs of people with disabilities, children, low-income people, seniors, and others. Yet, Illinois fails to compensate for the services provided.

Those communities will raise their voices today and tell Governor Rauner that he must end the impasse now. He must show leadership to pass a budget that includes revenue to fund services for underserved populations in Illinois.

At Access Living in Chicago, members of the community will gather to watch the State of the State. After the speech, the members from the audience will share feedback and present their own ideas about what the State of the State should look like.

In Springfield, other members of Access Living will join with the network of Centers for Independent Living in Illinois, and will participate in the Responsible Budget Coalition Rally just before the State of the State Address. At the State Capitol, Access Living will partner with others, taking their message directly to the Governor and Illinois.
