Knowledge is Power Webinar: Wed. May 7

May 6, 2025 | by Amber Smock

Are you stressed out about disability rights and funding at the national level right now? Many people are feeling overwhelmed and scared about proposed federal budget cuts to Medicaid, education, and housing, just to name a few. Plus, with mass terminations of federal employees and dismantling of agencies like the Administration on Community Living, it’s hard to know what to do. At times like these, it can be very important to find shared space to learn about important issues and come up with ideas for action.

Tomorrow, Wednesday May 7, consider joining us online for Knowledge is Power (KIP). KIP is a partnership between Access Living and the Illinois Council on Developmental Disabilities (ICDD). We hold online space every three weeks to support Illinois disability advocates in understanding what’s happening at the national level for people with disabilities. People outside Illinois are also welcome. Here are the details:

  • Date: Wednesday, May 7
  • Time: 1 pm-2:30 pm Central Time
  • How to sign up to join: Click here for the link to register for KIP. When you register, you will get an email with the link to join the meeting.
  • Access: This event will be captioned, with ASL and Spanish translation. Our topics will be presented in sections, with opportunities for questions.

What will we discuss? Amber Smock and Access Living staff will talk about what’s been happening with Medicaid and education, with a focus on the big healthcare hearing in Congress on Thursday. Also, we will be joined by attorney Jani Hoft of the People’s Law Office, who will talk about what to know about civil disobedience.

Remember that we are not alone. Every day, thousands of people are taking action to let policymakers in Washington know that the federal government plays an important role in the lives of people with disabilities. It’s a very challenging, difficult time for advocates, but every little bit helps! Join us tomorrow for support and ideas on what to do.

Please share this opportunity with folks in your community!
