SUMMARY:Virtual Book Launch: Year of the Tiger by Alice Wong
DESCRIPTION:Year of the Tiger: An Activist’s Life\, by Alice Wong\n\n\n\nJoin Women & Children First and Access Living for a virtual event celebrating Alice Wong’s Year of the Tiger: An Activist’s Life. \n\n\n\nWhile Alice Wong is recovering from a recent hospitalization\, her community will be stepping in to promote her memoir this fall. For this event\, Akemi Nishida and Sandie Yi will be joining us on Alice’s behalf. \n\n\n\nThis event will be held via Zoom Webinar. ASL and live captioning will be provided. If you need additional accommodations\, please contact us! \n\n\n\n\nEvent Registration\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Book\n\n\n\nThis groundbreaking memoir offers a glimpse into an activist’s journey to finding and cultivating community and the continued fight for disability justice\, from the founder and director of the Disability Visibility Project\, Alice Wong. \n\n\n\nIn Chinese culture\, the tiger is deeply revered for its confidence\, passion\, ambition\, and ferocity. That same fighting spirit resides in Alice Wong. \n\n\n\nDrawing on a collection of original essays\, previously published work\, conversations\, graphics\, photos\, commissioned art by disabled and Asian American artists\, and more\, Alice uses her unique talent to share an impressionistic scrapbook of her life as an Asian American disabled activist\, community organizer\, media maker\, and dreamer. From her love of food and pop culture to her unwavering commitment to dismantling systemic ableism\, Alice shares her thoughts on creativity\, access\, power\, care\, the pandemic\, mortality\, and the future. As a self-described disabled oracle\, Alice traces her origins\, tells her story\, and creates a space for disabled people to be in conversation with one another and the world. Filled with incisive wit\, joy\, and rage\, Wong’s Year of the Tiger will galvanize readers with big cat energy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Author\n\n\n\nAlice Wong is a disabled activist\, media maker\, and research consultant based in San Francisco\, California. She is the founder and director of the Disability Visibility Project\, an online community dedicated to creating\, sharing\, and amplifying disability media and culture. She has a Ph.D. in Disability Studies from the University of Illinois at Chicago; a MA in art therapy from SAIC\, and MFA from the University of California Berkeley. Crip Couture aims to preserve and conserve disability culture and narratives as heritage. Her research interests include Disability Arts and Culture; disability fashion; accessibility design and programming for arts and cultural venues; and social justice-based art therapy.  \n\n\n\nAkemi NishidaAkemi Nishida uses research\, education\, and activism to investigate the ways in which ableism are exercised in relation to racism\, cis-heteropatriarchy\, xenophobia\, and other forms of social injustices. She also uses such methods to work towards cross-community solidarity for the liberation and celebration of community power. She is the author of Just Care: Messy Entanglements of Disability\, Dependency\, and Desire (Temple University Press\, 2022) in which she examines public healthcare programs as well as grassroots interdependent care collectives and bed-space activism. She teaches at University of Illinois Chicago\, while also advocates for disability justice locally and nationally. \n\n\n\nBUY THE BOOK \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is brought to you by the Arts and Culture Project at Access Living\, an independent living center for people with disabilities\, and the Disability Culture Activism Lab (DCAL)\, a teaching lab housed under the department of art therapy and counseling at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. SUMMARY:Emergency Transportation: A Community Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Emergency Transportation: A Community Conversation\n\n\n\nOften when people with disabilities or seniors are picked up by an ambulance\, they are not able to bring their mobility\, medical\, communication\, or other devices with them. Not having these devices with them at the hospital may cause a serious issue for the person who may relay on this device(s) in their everyday life. \n\n\n\nCome share your story about emergency transportation services. We want to hear from you why it is vital that devices are transported in emergency situations! We will also discuss strategy for our campaign. \n\n\n\nASL and Spanish interpreters as well as CART transcription will be provided during the event.  \n\n\n\nIf you need additional information or have question about this event please contact Ryan McGraw at rmcgraw@accessliving.org or 312-640-2125. \n\n\n\nPlease register for this Community Conversation here.  \n\n\n\n\n     \n \n Ryan McGraw \n Community Organizer – Healthcare \n rmcgraw@accessliving.org \n (312) 640-2125

Using a peer support and collective care model\, disability community members and art therapy graduate students collaborate as disability culture makers for social change. \n\n\n\nThis program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency.

SUMMARY:Transporting Everything We Need: A Town Hall on Emergency Services (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Join Access Living for a virtual Town Hall meeting on emergency transportation on Thursday\, June 2nd from 5:30 PM-7 PM. Often when people with disabilities or seniors are picked up by an ambulance\, they are not able to bring their mobility\, medical\, communication\, or other devices with them. Not having these devices with them at the hospital may cause a serious issue for the person who may relay on this device(s) in their everyday life. \n\n\n\nThere will be a panel of people with disabilities that have been directly impacted by not being able to bring their device(s) to the hospital\, while being transported in the ambulance\, who will share their stories. \n\n\n\nPlease register for the town hall meeting here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0rd-ihrzgtE9y2GM4wbdADQT0IqTb6vFQQ \n\n\n\nASL and Spanish interpreters as well as CART transcription will be provided during the Town Hall.  \n\n\n\nIf you need additional information or have question about this event please contact Ryan McGraw.

SUMMARY:Disability Candidates Forum - Secretary of State (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Once again\, it’s an election year and disability community members are watching candidates closely for their commitment on disability policies and services. During the last several years\, Access Living has hosted multiple candidate forums that focus on key races that affect the lives of Illinoisans with disabilities. On June 1\, Access Living will host its latest Disability Candidates Forum from 2-3 pm. This time\, our focus is the statewide primary race for the Illinois Secretary of State.  \n\n\n\nThe Illinois Secretary of State is one of the most critical disability-related offices in Illinois. People with disabilities rely on the Secretary of State for driver education and licenses\, disability parking plates and placards. Driver services also include a mobile unit which travels around the state helping people with their driver’s licenses and state IDs\, as well as vehicle stickers. The Secretary also oversees the State Library\, which runs programs such as the Illinois Talking Book and Braille Service. Additionally\, the Secretary oversees the Court of Claims\, as well as Business Services which support companies and nonprofits in their annual reports and licenses. All of these programs affect the day-to-day lives of people with disabilities.  \n\n\n\nAs a nonpartisan disability services and advocacy organization\, Access Living invited all candidates from all parties who are running for Secretary of State\, according to the names listed with the State Board of Elections. For this event\, three candidates have confirmed to date: Dan Brady (R)\, Alderman David Moore (D)\, and Chicago City Clerk Anna Valencia (D).  \n\n\n\nDuring the Forum\, each candidate will have the opportunity to introduce themselves and their platforms. Our emcee\, John Herring\, will then ask candidates a series of disability-related questions\, as a panel on a round-robin basis. Candidates will then conclude with closing remarks. \n\n\n\nThe Disability Candidates Forum will be streamed live on Zoom\, with captioning and ASL interpreters. Spanish translators will be available by phone. For any additional reasonable accommodation requests\, please contact Jerome at jpalliser@accessliving.org\, or indicate your access needs when you register for the event. \n\n\n\nWe hope you will join us for this exciting and event. Please spread the word! \n\n\n\n\nRegister here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is co-sponsored by: \n\n\n\nIllinois Network of Centers for Independent Living \n\n\n\nRAMP CIL \n\n\n\nStatewide Independent Living Council of Illinois
