SUMMARY:Arts and Culture - deCRIPtion workshop (in-person)
DESCRIPTION:deCRIPtion:  storytelling and poetry workshops designed by and with disability community in mindThis month’s in-person deCRIPtion takes place at Access Living during MadMade\, a Mad Print Fair\, where you can meet Mad artists creating all kinds of prints\, find resources for mental health\, catch an artist panel – all in addition to attending our workshop: the brain is NOT a page: neurodiversity and poetics. \n\n\n\nThis worksop revels in the way neurodiverse brain loops\, hums\, fades\, sparks\, drifts and spirals. How it flashes fragments of sensation\, experience\, and feeling. This workshop leans into the mutable\, kaleidoschopc\, fluid\, recursive nature of neurodivergence as a driving force through working in fragmentation within form. This workshop asks: how do we translate the brain to the page?Register Here

SUMMARY:Arts and Culture - MadMade Print Fair
DESCRIPTION:What is MadMade? \n\n\n\nA one-day\, community-centered celebration of art\, care\, and collective empowerment. This is not your average craft fair. MadMade Print Fair is a mad-positive\, disability-affirming space that celebrates the creative contributions of artists with lived experience of madness and mental health differences. We are building a space of connection and cultural power\, one that pushes back against both the clinical gaze and the romanticized tropes of mental illness. We are centering real people making real work which is bold\, joyful\, angry\, vulnerable\, experimental\, and unapologetically human. \n\n\n\nMadMade Print Fair is designed to celebrate\, support\, and showcase the creative work of artists living with psychiatric disabilities and mental health challenges. In addition to artist tables and programming\, the fair will feature a dedicated area for mental health and community resource sharing. \n\n\n\nMadMade Info Here (no registration required) \n\n\n\nThe Fair will feature: \n\n\n\n\nArtist tables: Selling prints\, zines\, and related work in a welcoming\, community-focused environment\n\n\n\nHybrid artist panel: Join a public conversation with local and national artists about your process and lived experience.\n\n\n\nDiscussion with the Center for Mad Culture: Explore how madness and art intersect\, disrupt\, and empower\n\n\n\nMental health & community resources: A dedicated area offering tools and support from peer-led and social justice-based organizations.\n\n\n\nAccessibility is central. The event will be hosted at Accessibility Living—a fully accessible venue with ramps\, elevators\, and ADA-compliant bathrooms and hallways.\n\n\n\n\nWe invite you to bring your full self. Let’s gather in community to share art that challenges\, heals\, connects\, and refuses to be silent. \n\n\n\nMadMade is organized by Dylan Sturdy in conjunction with Spudnik Press\, The Center for Mad Culture\, and Access Living \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions\, feel free to contact: madmade@spudnikpress.org

SUMMARY:Your Story is More Than a Survival Guide Workshop Series
DESCRIPTION:Summer Storytelling Workshop Series\n\n\n\nBefore there was written language\, there was story. There is something almost primal in our draw to it\, in its capacity to hold us fixated and leave us transformed. From mainstream movies and TV shows\, to podcasts and marketing campaigns\, story\, in its many iterations\, is all around us in contemporary society. But how can we utilize our own personal stories in our work toward social justice and how does it work? What is story doing to us? How are we\, as individuals and a society\, crafted from it? How might story transform not only what we know\, but what we can know\, and what worlds we might imagine? \n\n\n\nIn this 6-week workshop series\, we will explore these questions as we develop stories from our own lived experiences. This class is underscored by the belief of the facilitator that our personal narratives can be a driving force for making substantive change— for creating spaces of human connection\, healing\, and justice. We’d like to invite anyone interested in joining these pursuits to join us\, no matter your experience level with storytelling or writing. \n\n\n\n\nRegister here\n\n\n\n\nFacilitator:  \n\n\n\nJoy Young (they/them) is a queer\, neurodivergent impact storyteller\, performance poet\, independent scholar\, educator\, and curriculum development expert. Currently\, Joy a program coordinator at Access Living and Project Assistant for Bodies of Work (BOW) where they focus on disability arts and culture in Chicago\, IL. Joy has been accepted to present at conferences on their work around the arts\, inclusive practices\, learning\, and advocacy including presenting at the 4th Annual Symposium on Disability at Yale\, the Queer Lecture Series at Sonoma State University\, and the Women’s & Gender Studies Consortium at University of Wisconsin-Madison. Joy has an MS in Justice Studies from Arizona State University where they crafted a free\, open source\, storytelling and poetics for justice informational workbook\, Your Story is More Than a Survival Guide based on their research and over 10 years of experience as a teaching artist. The book is available on their website at joyyoung.org. This workshop series is based on that work. \n\n\n\nJoy’s performance work\, which been featured on Button Poetry\, Everyday Feminism\, SlamFind\, and on stages\, in classrooms and community spaces across the country\, is underscored by the belief that our personal narratives can be a driving force for making substantive change— for creating spaces of human connection\, healing\, and justice. Joy brings this approach to their work in community and research where they have partnered with a variety of groups\, organizations\, individuals\, and businesses creating and often facilitating programming that utilizes pragmatic applications of storytelling and poetics as well as other arts-based methods. Joy currently lives in Chicago with their partner and 90-pound dog\, Fable and believes our stories hold the key to creating a better world.
