Access Living is unique among Centers for Independent Living in its capacity to implement legal strategies to promote the rights of persons with disabilities. Its Legal Team enforces federal, state and local civil rights laws, including the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Fair Housing Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and related laws, which prohibit discrimination against persons with disabilities.
Access Living has historically worked to eradicate housing discrimination through its Fair Housing Enforcement Project. Challenging discriminatory treatment is important because discrimination, combined with the lack of affordable housing and the gloomy prospect of finding accessible housing, presents a potent barrier for persons with disabilities in need of housing.
