Asst: Advocacy Manager
This organizing position will be responsible for supporting Access Living’s community organizing on the topics of healthcare and Medicaid home/community based services (HCBS). The organizer will focus on the base-building and recruitment of grassroots disability leaders of all ages to build Access Living’s capacity for advocacy mobilization. The organizer will also be responsible for ensuring cross-disability inclusion and access for related meetings and events. The position will also work closely with Access Living’s community partners in this topic area, and be engaged in public education on disability-centered healthcare and HCBS for a wide range of audiences.
This position will collaborate closely with the Health/HCBS Policy Analyst and other Access Living staff as needed.
• The position will support the development and implementation of community organizing campaigns on topics including but not limited to: healthcare access and navigation, Medicaid home and community based services, transition of people with disabilities from institutional settings to community based settings.
• Campaign Development: In coordination with manager and fellow organizers, design and coordinate organizing campaigns for systems change and reform at the local, state and Federal levels which support Access Living’s mission and strategic goals related to healthcare and HCBS.
• Base Building: Recruit new grassroots leaders through any combination of the following: social media, tabling at community events, phone banking, canvassing, one-on-ones, house meetings, presentations at/referrals from AL independent living services, and more.
• Training and Leadership Development: Provide grassroots leaders in the disability community with leadership development and organizing training; train people with disabilities on advocacy, legislative processes, and direct action.
• Ensuring Access and Inclusion: Ensure that meetings/events are as consistently accessible and inclusive as possible, including but not limited to discussion time and various formats of written materials.
• Coalition Building: Build and cultivate relationships with community groups, advocacy organizations, and government agencies to create broad coalition support for disability rights issues,
• Internal Collaboration: Coordinate with Access Living legal and direct services staff as needed, and to recruit members from those clients assisted,
• Policy Support: Support and collaborate with Health/HCBS Policy Analyst in monitoring campaign-relevant policy and legislation at local, state and Federal levels; coordinating public and written testimony and comments on proposed legislation and policy/rule changes; and promoting new policies and policy reform efforts to further the disability movement.
• Community Education/Outreach: Responsible for creating flyers and written materials to support community organizing and public education, including for the press and social media; Provide internal and external workshops as needed; coordinate with communications team to amplify work through public affairs.
• Miscellaneous Duties: Conduct written quarterly project activities reports; ensure compliance with grant requirements through regular data entry; act as a spokesperson for Access Living on campaign-specific issues as assigned; and execute any other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
Bachelor’s degree and/or applicable life/work experience preferred. Specific training in community organizing approaches a plus. Good communication skills, both for public presentations and written reports. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Training in creating access/inclusion for people with various disabilities in community organizing a strongly preferred plus.
3-5 years experience in community organizing strongly preferred. Knowledge of health/HCBS issues affecting people with disabilities, racial justice issues, disability issues, and/or independent living philosophy is strongly preferred. Understanding of social media is required.
Must be able to travel extensively within the City of Chicago, as well as occasional travel outside of Chicago.
