Abdi Maya has served as the Outreach and Education Coordinator for the Fair Housing Division of the Illinois Department of Human Rights for over 6 years. Ms. Maya conducts statewide trainings, presentations and activities on housing rights and responsibilities under the Illinois Human Rights Act. She has worked with numerous organizations, property owners, municipalities, and community members to promote and advance equal opportunity in housing.
Under the leadership of Director Rocco J. Claps, Ms. Maya has developed materials and coordinated agency–sponsored events aimed at creating awareness about issues concerning various populations including LGBTQ, immigrant and disability communities, while relating these topics to a broader human rights framework.
Ms. Maya is a graduate in Politics and Government from Illinois State University with minors in Psychology, International Business and Japanese Studies. She holds a Masters in Business Administration from National–Louis University. Abdi is a first generation Mexican–American born on the northwest side of the City and raised partially in the suburbs. She is an active member of a variety of professional and community groups looking to create a real and positive impact in Chicago.
