Chicago Housing Authority (CHA)

CHA staff help Access Living consumers apply for their Housing Choice Vouchers.
Access Living works hard to protect and enforce the rights of residents with disabilities who live in buildings managed by the Chicago Housing Authority. More than 20 percent of CHA residents have a disability, but very few CHA employees are working on behalf of the interests of these residents. Access Living is organizing CHA residents in an effort to improve the services CHA offers to residents with disabilities.

On Friday, May 7, 2010, Access Living once again hosted the Chicago Housing Authority to begin the initial process to provide Housing Choice Vouchers (HCVs) to our People. This time we were able to provide HCVs to thirty-six (36) individuals. Why is this important? Because this was the largest group ever to receive Vouchers since we began this partnership with CHA to FREE OUR PEOPLE! This process does not occur anywhere else in the country. The work that went into this event would not have been possible without the dedication to FREEING OUR PEOPLE of our Deinstitutionalization Staff, of Beto Barrera for working tirelessly on the Policy end to make this available to Access Living consumers, and finally to our consumers who are now able to move out of their institutionalized situations and join those who have real choice in their housing options.

Our 2nd floor conference room was truly at capacity levels and the wonderful staff from CHA worked from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. to ensure this process went smoothly. CHA continues to await for more referrals from Access Living, so make sure you set up an appointment with one of our Housing Counselors.
