Giving Tuesday: How do you give back?

Access Living moved Jimmie Yarbrough out of a nursing home in 2011, and since then, Jimmie has been giving back by volunteering at Access Living.

Jimmie Yarbrough ended up in a nursing home in 2008 as a result of a spinal injury. Similar to the experience of others who have lived nursing homes, Jimmie recalls the lack of independence and proper care given to residents. After being in the home for a couple of years, he learned about Access Living from another nursing home resident. Eager to become independent again, Jimmie reached out to inquire about Access Living’s community reintegration program, which moves people with disabilities out of nursing homes and into their own homes.

With the help of Access Living, in November 2011 Jimmie moved out of the nursing home and into an apartment of his own that is accessible and affordable. While in transition, Jimmie became a mentee in Stepping Stones, a program in which former nursing home residents mentor those in transition about the challenges they face as they begin to live on their own again. When comparing his life out of the nursing home, Jimmie says, “There is the freedom to eat what and when I want, to come and go as I please, watch TV on my own schedule, and volunteer and work.”

Jimmie now gives back to Access Living by volunteering for Access Living’s Stepping Stones program. “Working with Stepping Stones I get the chance to help other people that are in nursing homes. So that’s my way of giving back. Access Living has helped me to help other people.”

In addition to being a mentor, Jimmie assists with administrative tasks that pertain to the program. He looks forward to continuing to help others and spends his free time watching sports.

What is Giving Tuesday?

Giving Tuesday is a nationwide philanthropic initiative that began in 2012. The initiative is dedicated to giving - when charities, families, businesses, community centers, students, retailers and more all come together for a movement to celebrate giving and kick-off the holiday season. Last year, more than 10,000 organizations in 46 countries came together to celebrate #GivingTuesday. We invite you to join the movement and to help get out the give this December 2.
