Battles over Medicaid heating up in Illinois

This note is from Amber Smock, Access Living’s Director of Advocacy.

Dear Access Living friends and allies,

This spring, one of the hottest issues in Illinois is how and whether the State and the General Assembly will make cuts to Medicaid. Many of Access Living’s community members rely on Medicaid for services they cannot acquire through any other means than Medicaid. Even things you would think are obviously valuable such as durable medical equipment (like wheelchairs and scooters) are OPTIONAL. The Department of Health and Family Services provided a menu of optional services they could cut this spring.

State Rep Greg Harris posted these on his Facebook page and he, along with many other legislators (Democrat and Republican) are looking to get feedback on which cuts are or are not acceptable.

Remember, Access Living’s position is that we can save money through home and community based services --- the more we save by keeping people in the community, the bigger the pot will be for everybody.

I have a friend who refers to transparency as keeping people “dangerously informed.” Thing is, if we don’t all stay as informed as we can on this matter and give voice to our concerns, we or people we know may very well be in danger of losing life-sustaining supports. Let’s keep empowering each other.

Visit Representative Harris’ Facebook Page.

Also, contact your state legislators. Tell them why Medicaid is important to you.
