Activists Urge Developmental Center Closures; Demand Meaningful Community Supports
On Tuesday, October 25th at 11 a.m., Access Living and many other members of the disability community will host a rally in support of the closure of institutions that warehouse people with developmental disabilities.
Members of the media are invited to hear advocates with disabilities and family members talk about their support for the Governor's proposed closure of two of Illinois' State Operated Developmental Centers. Many of the speakers will also have been present at the Jacksonville Developmental Center COGFA hearing the night before, October 24th, in Jacksonville, and can provide their reaction to that event.
Speakers will provide the facts about why state developmental disabilities institutions must be closed in Illinois and why community living offers people with disabilities a safer way of living with quality, independence and equality.
