Each year, Access Living’s festive Gala raises funds to support programs and services, and recognizes the accomplishments of the community over the past year. This year’s event was a great success, with a celebration honoring Senator Ted Kennedy and Dr. Henry Betts for their contributions to the disability community.

Hundreds rally to mark Olmstead Anniversary
On June 22, 1999, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that unnecessary institutionalization of people with disabilities is discrimination. Ten years later, the State of Illinois still is unable to offer people with disabilities a real choice in terms of where to receive long-term care services.

Disability Advocates attend State Hearing to urge closure of institution for people with developmental disabilities.
Access Living, a Chicago disability advocacy and services organization, will be sending a contingent of advocates to today’s State of Illinois legislative hearing on the closure of Mabley Developmental Center in Dixon, Illinois. The hearing will begin at 5 pm at the Dixon Theatre, 114 S. Galena Avenue in Dixon.

Disability Culture: Fe Fes travel to west coast for awareness event
On April 13, I traveled with the Empowered Fe Fes to the State of Washington to speak at Eastern Washington University for a Disability Awareness Week conference. I am the Women & Girls Organizer for the Empowered Fe Fes, which is a group of young women with various disabilities who have worked for over 15 years together to explore the issues and struggles unique to young women with disabilities while spreading awareness about disability rights.

Disability groups rally against budget that fails to support people with disabilities in the community
Thursday morning, February 24, individuals and organizations representing a wide range of disabilities rallied outside the Thompson Center against Governor Quinn’s proposed state budget. The advocates called on Quinn to rescind cuts to services that empower people with disabilities to live independently in the community.
