National Campaign to Stop cuts to Medicaid
National political leaders continue to target Medicaid as a way to trim federal spending. Cuts to Medicaid would come at the expense of people with disabilities and seniors, threatening resources that enable people to live independently. A new disability campaign urges the White House and Congress to reform, rather than cut, Medicaid by investing in community-based services that save money and enable independence.

National ADAPT in DC protesting against Medicaid Cuts
ADAPT has spent the last two days occupying parts of the Capitol Building, protesting against proposed cuts to Medicaid services. If these cuts go through, thousands of people with disabilities could lose vital services that enable them to live in their own homes. Without the supports, people may be forced into nursing homes and institutions.

On April 12, about 15 staff and consumers rallied in Springfield, sat in on the Human Services budget hearing (Ann Ford of Illinois Network of Centers for Independent Living testified) and met with legislators to urge them to support services that enable people with disabilities to live in their own homes and communities.

Senate fails to ratify international disability rights treaty
On Tuesday, December 4, the U.S. Senate failed by five votes to reach the two thirds majority needed to ratify the United Nations International Treaty on the Rights of People with Disabilities. The final vote count was 61-38. Though the treaty earned bipartisan support, Republican Senators cast all 38 votes against the treaty.
