Health care protections under fire in Washington Though health care legislation benefits people with disabilities,
the U.S. House of Representatives has introduced legislation to repeal the law. The House will vote on repeal on Wednesday, January 19 .

In the face of the vote, the disability community is organizing to protect the current health care law. People with disabilities are urged to contact their representatives and senators and urge them to preserve health care protections for people with disabilities.

Housing advocate testifies in Washington, D.C. in support of the Inclusive Home Design ActThe Inclusive Home Design Act aims to increase the number of homes accessible to people with disabilities by applying visitability standards. The principle of visitability seeks to create homes that are affordable and sustainable, and utilize a design approach that integrates accessibility features into newly-built homes. Last week, Beto Barrera, Access Living’s Manager of Community Development, testified in support of the Act in Washington, D.C. in front of the Subcommittee on Housing and Community Opportunity. Illinois budget cuts threaten independence of people with disabilities
A few weeks ago, Illinois announced millions of dollars in cuts to programs that support people with disabilities living independently in their own homes and communities. Statewide, the community is organizing to stop the cuts. Community based programs support the independence of people with disabilities and make fiscal sense — community services cost less than institutional services.
