Maram, No. 01-C-9551 (N.D. Ill.). April 1, 2008
Chicago Foundation for Women recognizes youth leader with Founders AwardAmber Smock, Access Living’s Youth Leadership Coordinator, will be awarded the Founders Award from the Chicago Foundation for Women in June 2008. The Award recognizes Amber’s commitment ‘to changing systems, laws and attitudes that prevent people with disabilities from achieving their full potential and rightful place in society.’ April 29, 2008
New transit makes public transportation more affordable for people with disabilitiesn early June, the Illinois House and Senate both passed transit bill SB 1920 last week and has 30 days to present it to the Governor for his signature. The Governor is said to favor the bill. Once signed, transit providers have 60 days to implement the components; providers have not yet worked out specifics. June, 2008

National Campaign to Stop cuts to Medicaid National political leaders continue to target Medicaid as a way to trim federal spending. Cuts to Medicaid would come at the expense of people with disabilities and seniors, threatening resources that enable people to live independently. A new disability campaign urges the White House and Congress to reform, rather than cut, Medicaid by investing in community-based services that save money and enable independence. July 13, 2011

Safe lifting bill a first for people with disabilities new legislation first of its kind to protect people with disabilities in hospitals On July 14, 2011, Illinois Governor Quinn signed into law Public Act 97-0122, which amended the Illinois Hospital Licensing Act to require implementation of policies that protect people with disabilities when lifting or transferring.
