Community Supports -- Independent Living

Access Living’s Community Support Independent Living initiatives offer people with disabilities the tools to participate in, engage with, and grow in the community.

These initiatives include:

Community Supports: Access Living Community Supports services support people with disabilities in their own homes. The program, funded by a Community Development Block Grant administered by the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities, is designed to provide people with disabilities who are living in the community with the resources they need to continue living independently. Community Supports Staff will visit people with disabilities at their homes, assessing their needs and link them with services. Services offered through the program include: Homemaker services, daily living skills training, and assistive technology assessment and acquisition. Accessing the services, people with disabilities will have the resources they need to execute day-to-day activities like cooking, cleaning, managing a bank account and navigating computers and telecommunications.

Access Living’s Deaf Literacy class is an unprecedented English literacy class geared for Deaf consumers whose primary language is American Sign Language.

The Financial Stability program makes a concerted push to raise consumers’ awareness about the benefits of learning more about their financial matters. Over the course of 11 weeks participants are equipped with materials and tools to help them better manage and take control of their personal finances.

Reaching Our Dreams was developed as a way to help youth develop skills that will enable them to become independent and more invested in planning for their futures. The program Reaching goal is to shatter the traditional way of presenting information and replace it with a new interactive approach to learning and applying skills.
