Access Living’s 30th Anniversary Gala
Senator Harkin and Mayor Daley honored for leadership

Access Living's 30th Anniversary Gala
On June 7th, more than 600 members of the corporate, non-profit, and disability community gathered at the majestic Grand Ballroom at Navy Pier to celebrate Access Living's 30th Anniversary Gala. The 30th Anniversary Gala honored Senator Tom Harkin and Mayor Richard M. Daley with the "Lead On" awards for their leadership on behalf of people with disabilities. A tribute to Justin Dart, Jr., the disability rights movement's most beloved leader, Access Living's "Lead On" award honors individuals who promote the empowerment and independence of people with disabilities. Access Living recognized Senator Harkin for his leadership behind the passage of every major piece of disability rights legislation, including the Americans with Disabilities Act, since he took office in 1984. Mayor Daley earned an award for his continued efforts to promote the inclusion of people with disabilities in the community. He is currently working toward making Chicago the most accessible city in the country.
In addition to "Lead On" Awards, Photographer Tom Olin was recognized for his continued efforts to capture on film the disability movement across the country.
The 2010 Gala was a huge success, with an exciting program that included a spirited rendition of the Star Spangled banner by violinist Nura Aly, the renowned and legendary anchor Warner Saunders serving as MC, and the flare of Leslie Hindman, who conducted the Access Living Live Auction with charisma, dignity and humor.
Access Living wishes to extend a generous thank you to the support and leadership of Corporate Chair John W. Rowe (Chairman and CEO of Exelon Corporation) and Event Chair Linda Mastandrea, (International Paralympian), who were both instrumental in making the event possible. With the leadership of the Rowe and Mastandrea, and with the support of our guests, Access Living raised more than $700,000 for Access Living programs and services. With your help, Access Living will continue moving forward and empowering people with disabilities, because, in the words of Mayor Daley, "I firmly believe we can do better every day . . . we will not accept the status quo."
