Working At Access Living

Carrie Kaufman, Peer Counselor, Access Living

"I get a lot out of working here at Access Living. The constant interaction with my coworkers is great. Everyone's always taking on more than they can handle because no one here can say no – there are so many great programs and opportunities – everyone wants to help everyone else. It's really personal work. Take for example the peer counseling I do at RIC, where I coordinate a mentoring program for newly injured people. I benefitted from the program as a consumer in 2003, so it's really rewarding. It also feels good to be on the other side of things.

"At Access Living I facilitate a weekly women's group and a monthly cross-disability peer support group. Both groups have been meeting for 20 years or so! They have become such a vital part of so many peoples' routine, as they have come to rely upon the support and consistency of the groups. Sometimes in our groups we don't talk about anything serious at all – it's just a comfortable, safe peer setting, with no judgment where we can network and share experiences. "
