The
Empowered Fe Fes!
Girls with disabilities go underserved
by girl groups and by disability groups. The majority of
girls with disabilities grow up without any real
information about their sexuality, without pride in
their identity, without knowledge of the disability
rights movement or the power of disabled sisterhood.
For eight years Access Living in
Chicago has been running the only program for teenage
girls with disabilities in the United States, the
Empowered Fe Fes.
Susan Nussbaum and Ana
Mercado coordinate the Empowered Fe Fes, a group of
girls with all kinds of disabilities who meet to talk
about issues like: dating
and sexuality,
Human Rights,
and becoming independent
The Empowered Fe Fes
speak out for disability rights in many ways. For
example, check out the award-winning film they made. Its
called “Beyond Disability: The Fe Fe Stories.”
